Studying Optometry

How do I become an Optometrist?

Optometrists undertake a Bachelor of Optometry degree through one of three Australian Universities:

  • University of Melbourne
  • University of New South Wales
  • Queensland University of Technology

The degree is a full time, four or five year course (dependent upon the University). The majority of the early part of the degree is based upon theoretical knowledge; whilst the latter part of the course involves clinical application of the knowledge with supervised patient consultations.

Is the course difficult to enter?

Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of Optometry places available (approximately 120 throughout Australia), so competition to gain entry is intense. Final year marks need to be at the top end of the scale to enter Optometry, and usually require a science background.
