Employment prospects

What are the job prospects once I become a qualified Optometrist?

Excellent! Qualified Optometrists have little difficulty obtaining positions in private practice or in further visual research. Over the past 10 years, the rate of unemployment amongst recently graduated Optometrists has been almost nil.

The starting salary of recent optometry graduates over this same ten year period has consistently been in the top three of all professions, and has been marginally greater than the average Australian wage (across the entire population).

In 2001, the average starting salary of Optometry graduates was $43,000 p.a., behind only Dentistry ($46,400) and Medicine and ($45,000). This figure was significantly higher than the average starting salary of all professions ($35,000).
